Check if AI recommends your business

Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask who is a good business of your type nearby. If your name is missing, here is what it means and what to do next.

Here is how to find out whether AI assistants recommend your business: open ChatGPT or Perplexity, ask them who is a good business of your type in your town, and see if your name comes up. It takes about five minutes, and it tells you something your website analytics will not.

Start with Perplexity, because it searches the live web and shows its sources. Type a question the way a customer would. Something like "who is a good garden centre in Barrie" or "best independent pharmacy near Markham." Read the answer, then read the sources it used to build that answer. Now do the same in ChatGPT. If you have the free version, turn on search so it can look at current pages rather than answering from memory.

Ask the question a few different ways. Customers do not all phrase things the same, so try "near me," try your neighbourhood name, try the specific thing you sell. Note which businesses keep showing up. Those are the ones the AI has decided are the safe answer.

If you do not appear, it does not mean your business is doing badly. It means the AI could not find enough clear, consistent information about you to include you with confidence. These tools pull from your website, from directory listings, from reviews, and from other pages that describe what you do and where you are. When that information is thin, out of date, or scattered, the AI leaves you out and names a competitor instead.

That matters more each month, because customers who used to type a search into Google are now asking an assistant for a straight recommendation. When the assistant answers, it usually names two or three businesses. If you are not one of them, you were never in the conversation, and you will not see it in your traffic reports.

So what do you do if you are invisible. First, check that the basics are accurate everywhere the AI might look. Your website should say plainly what you do, where you are, and who you serve. Your listings and hours should match. Vague or missing information is the most common reason an operator gets skipped.

Second, understand that appearing is not a one-time fix and no honest advisor can promise you a specific spot in ChatGPT. These systems change, and they weigh many sources. What you can do is give them clear, current, specific material to work from, and keep it fresh so the picture of your business stays accurate over time.

This is the work behind our Get Found service. We build the website foundation and run an ongoing content engine so the AI has something solid and specific to cite when a customer asks. You can run the test above yourself today. If your name is missing, that is the signal to start.
