Why AI recommends closed businesses over yours

AI recommends closed businesses over yours when they have a deeper, more consistent web footprint. The fix is making your open business the better-verified

If an AI assistant recommends a business that has closed while skipping yours, it is almost always because the closed business has more consistent, longer-established information across the web than you do, and nothing is telling the assistant you are the better current choice. The fix is to make your open, active business the more legible and better-verified one.

AI assistants trust accumulated signal. A business that operated for fifteen years leaves a deep footprint: hundreds of directory entries, years of reviews, mentions in local articles, a consistent name and address repeated across the web. When it closes, that footprint does not vanish overnight. The assistant still reads it and still treats it as a real, established option.

A newer or quieter business that is very much open may have a thin footprint by comparison. Fewer reviews, fewer listings, less history. So the assistant weighs a large pile of old, consistent evidence against a small pile of new, sparse evidence, and the old pile wins. It is not choosing a closed business on purpose. It simply has more to go on.

To you, the fact that you are open and the other business is gone is self-evident. To an assistant, being open is not a fact it can assume. It is a signal it has to read somewhere. If your Google Business Profile does not clearly show current hours, if you have no recent reviews, if nothing on your site has changed in a year, the assistant has no current evidence that you are active and trading. Absence of a signal reads as absence of the business.

A handful of specific things tell an assistant a business is current: a Google Business Profile marked open, with accurate hours and recent activity; reviews with recent dates; a website that shows signs of being maintained; consistent business information across the listings the assistant reads; and any recent third-party mention. Each of these is a small vote for "this business is here now." Together they outweigh an old footprint, however deep.

Make your current status impossible to miss. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile and keep it accurate. Ask recent customers for reviews so the newest ones are dated this month, not two years ago. Keep your listings consistent so the assistant sees one coherent business rather than several half-matching ones. Publish content that is plainly recent and local. The goal is to replace the closed competitor's advantage of history with your advantage of being real, active, and verifiable today.

No one can reach into an assistant and delete a competitor or force your name forward. What you can do is give the assistant so much current, consistent evidence that you are the open, active, obvious choice that keeping an old closed business ahead of you stops making sense to it.

Kozentis does this for owner-operated businesses across Canada: making sure the signals that say open and active are present, consistent, and current, so an assistant has no reason to send a customer to a business that no longer exists instead of yours.
